Yes, this is known as “internal routing.” It is the preferred method for new construction or major renovations because it conceals the PVC piping within closets, wall chases, or the garage. By routing the pipe through the interior of the home and out through the roof (much like a standard plumbing vent) the system remains aesthetically invisible from the outside. However, for existing homes, internal routing is often more expensive and invasive, as it requires cutting into drywall and navigating between floor joists, which is why many retrofitted systems use an exterior-mounted pipe.

In most jurisdictions and according to EPA standards, the answer is no. While side-wall venting might seem easier, it is generally discouraged or prohibited for several reasons. First, radon is a heavy gas; if vented low to the ground, it can linger near the foundation or enter through nearby basement windows. Second, the moisture-laden air from the soil can cause “white-rot” or ice damage to your siding. Finally, a vertical, roof-penetrating exhaust uses the natural buoyancy of warm air to help move the gas upward, even if the fan were to experience a momentary drop in performance.

While a radon system is not technically an air purifier or a filtration system, it provides significant secondary air quality benefits. By creating a vacuum beneath the house, the system pulls out a large amount of soil moisture and “soil air” before it can enter the basement. This reduction in vapor intrusion often leads to a noticeable drop in basement humidity levels and the elimination of “musty” odors. Most modern fans operate on roughly 60 to 90 watts of power – roughly equivalent to keeping one or two old-fashioned incandescent lightbulbs turned on. Depending on your local utility rates, you can expect the system to add between $5 and $15 per month to your electric bill. Given the health protection it provides, most homeowners find this to be a very low-cost “insurance policy.”
